Susan G. Komen recently launched their new Bold Goal to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths in the US by 50% by the year 2026. Research shows us that 1/3 of those deaths can be prevented through proper breast health education and early detection alone. With Louisiana ranking second in the nation for breast cancer mortality, educational programming that facilitates access to resources and screenings is needed now more than ever!
That’s why Susan G. Komen Louisiana launched the Komen Breast Health Initiative. For our event, we go in to churches and community centers in our service area, and, not only share more in-depth breast health information, but we will also have a dietitian speak about healthy diet choices, a personal trainer will teach exercises that can be done at home, and other activities depending on where the event is being held. We are teaming up with organizations to ensure access to screening would be available in the area within a few weeks of the event. We are also partnering with other organizations to ensure access to screenings and other much needed resources. Finally, we will create a transportation plan with participating churches and organizations to ensure that anyone who needs further testing will have transportation to the testing site.
This combination not only covers breast health education, but also ties in making healthy lifestyle choices to decrease one’s risk for breast cancer. In addition, this set up also addresses the three biggest barriers in our community identified which are in our Community Profile – education, screening, and transportation. Our community profile is completed every four years and assesses the current services, resources, and barriers present in the communities we serve so that we know how to best help our service area.
